iCloud check: Find My & Activation Lock
Enter the iPhone’s IMEI to see the model and build its verification report, starting with Find My, Activation Lock and iCloud Lost Mode. Every answer shows whether a provider verified it or you confirmed it on the phone.
- Free, no sign-up
- Model lookup runs in your browser
- A source on every line
How this iCloud check works
- Identity, instantly and privately. The IMEI is validated in your browser, and its TAC identifies the iPhone model and model number.
- Online status check (where connected). When this site has a licensed status provider connected, “Run online check” asks that provider for Find My, iCloud lock, carrier lock and blacklist status. Each answer shows the provider’s name, its exact wording and the time. Your IMEI goes to that provider only when you press the button.
- The on-device check, always available. Each row has a guided check you can do on the iPhone in about a minute. You can record what you saw. Your answer is labelled as your own observation, not as independent verification.
The 1-minute Activation Lock test before you pay
- Ask the seller to sign out of their Apple Account: Settings → [their name] → Sign Out. This turns off Find My.
- Erase it while you watch: Settings → General → Transfer or Reset iPhone → Erase All Content and Settings.
- On the Hello screen, start setup. If it shows iPhone Locked to Owner or asks for an Apple Account that isn’t yours, Activation Lock is still on. Walk away.
This is the method Apple describes for checking a used device. See Apple Support: Activation Lock.
Questions
What is the difference between Find My, Activation Lock and iCloud Lost Mode?
Find My is the setting that lets the owner locate and erase the iPhone. Activation Lock is the protection it switches on: Apple says “Activation Lock turns on automatically when you turn on Find My”, so after an erase the iPhone asks for the owner’s Apple Account. Lost Mode is a report the owner makes in iCloud when the phone is lost: it locks the screen and shows a message. They are different statuses, and our report lists each one separately.
Can a website see who owns the iCloud account?
No legitimate check reveals the owner’s Apple Account, name or email. Treat any site that offers this with suspicion.
Is a Find My “OFF” result enough to buy the phone?
It is a good sign, but also check that the phone is not blacklisted, not carrier-locked and not managed (MDM). Then erase it in front of you and make sure setup reaches the Hello screen without asking for someone else’s Apple Account.
Why did Apple remove its own Activation Lock checker?
Apple took its public Activation Lock status page offline in January 2017 and did not give a reason. Since then, online “iCloud checks” come from commercial providers, not from Apple. That is why every online result here names its provider and time.
What if the seller says they forgot their Apple Account password?
Don’t buy the phone. Only the owner can remove Activation Lock, by signing out, by removing the device at iCloud.com, or by Apple with proof of purchase.
