MEID & ESN converter

Convert CDMA device identifiers between their hexadecimal and decimal forms. Also calculates the MEID check digit and the pseudo-ESN (pESN) that networks derive from it.

Hex letters can be upper or lower case. A 15th hex character is treated as the MEID check digit and verified.

Formats

IdentifierHex formDecimal form
MEID14 characters: region code (2), manufacturer (6), serial (6), plus an optional check character18 digits: the first 8 hex characters as 10 decimal digits, then the last 6 as 8 decimal digits
ESN8 characters: manufacturer (2), serial (6)11 digits: manufacturer (3), serial (8)
pESN8 characters starting 8011 digits starting 128

The MEID check digit uses the Luhn algorithm in base 16. It is printed on labels but not sent over the air.

Questions

What is an MEID?

The Mobile Equipment Identifier is the 56-bit device identifier used by CDMA phones (3GPP2). It is written as 14 hexadecimal characters or as 18 decimal digits. It replaced the 32-bit ESN when ESNs ran out.

What is a pESN?

A pseudo-ESN is a 32-bit value derived from an MEID, for networks that still expect an ESN. It is 0x80 followed by the last 24 bits of the SHA-1 hash of the MEID. pESNs are not unique: different MEIDs can share one.

Why does my phone show both an IMEI and an MEID?

Phones that support both GSM/LTE and CDMA networks carry both. For such phones the MEID is usually the first 14 digits of the IMEI (decimal, starting with 99 or 35), so they are the same number in two forms.

Can I look up the model from an MEID?

Only if it is a decimal-form MEID that matches an IMEI. In that case, check the IMEI in the IMEI checker. Hexadecimal MEIDs (starting A0–FF) are not covered by TAC data.
